The Mag

Edition 1, 17th June 2013

Editors Intro

Welcome to the inaugural edition of ‘The Mag’. We have put together the best young writers in Mallacoota to present a monthly Mag, by the students, for the student.  I would like to take this opportunity to introduce my team. Emma is a player in the corridors of power. In this edition Emma has a fantastic interview with two of our year twelve students. Marc is our music aficionado, who this month is investigating Drum and Base. Mark Hoops “Hooprez” is our adrenaline junkie. This week his reporting takes us into the world of mountain biking. Jaidyn is from the Matrix itself, informing us about all that is gaming. To finalise the introduction and launch us into the most anticipated Mag since sliced bread, bask in the glory of our writers.

Year 12 – Career Interviews. – Emma Spenser

My name is Emma, I am in year 11. In our vet IDM class we are making a secondary school magazine. Each month a new article on careers will appear. In this month’s issue, I decided to interview two of our year 12 students who have offered to participant. I asked the two students a few questions about year twelve and their plans afterwards, and also I have added some facts about careers that you may be interested in.

This month…
Jasmyn & Ruby

What do you wish to accomplish by the end of 2013?
Jasmyn: ‘I wish to accomplish all of my VCE subjects and obtain  a good high score that I am happy with for each subject.I wish to have made a good amount of money to help me get started and ready for uni life, and travelling.’
Ruby: ‘I wish to achieve high scores in all my classes.’

What are your plans when you finish school?
Jasmyn: ‘I plan to go to uni to study Graphic Design and Photography, and travel to countries to volunteer in disadvantage schools and also wildlife parks.’

As from seen above, one of our students is quite sure as to what they want to be, and our other student is not one hundred precent sure as to what they want to do.

You, Me and Gaming – Jaidyn

Hi I’m Jaidyn, your everyday dedicated gamer. In this article I will highlight the best of the games I have played lately. I am reviewing Midnight Club: Los Angeles

Midnight Club: Los Angeles                                                                                        Genre: Racing 10/10

Good:

  • Great cars, street races, drifting.
  • Sound and graphics
  • Fun

Bad:

  • Few pointless missions
  • Minimal storyline

Ever since getting the PS3 I have been looking for a car game that feels like Need for Speed: Most Wanted (on the PS2). Need for Speed: Most Wanted was a free roam games were you can pimp your car and do competition races. I enjoy racing games such as Forza or Grand Tourismo but I feel this different to those.

Here is a YouTube trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-g9xSorDlc

An older game but a well-deserved platinum game.

Midnight Club: Los Angeles was recommended to me in my search and it is a great game if you are looking for great cars, street races, drifting, and great car customisation options.

The game is aesthetically pleasing as well as its content being solid. The only thing I found wrong were a few tedious and pointless missions such as ‘win 6 races in an SUV’. They were kind of annoying because I don’t want to spend money on a car I will use for 6 races and SUV’s are not meant for racing.

I found myself enthralled in the game from the moment I got it. I didn’t find any glitches or problems and I was 100 precent happy with sound and picture.

I must admit that I ‘rage quit’ when I lost my band new Lamborghini Gallardo in a pink slip race and had to start with a cheap car. I had to slowly build back up so be careful (Turning of the PS3 before it saved didn’t work).

The story line was very minimal and there could be more cut scenes. But all in all it is about the racing and car mods and it has done this so well. The re-playability is high if it’s your kind of game and I highly recommend it.

Samdog’s Music Mayhem

Hey there. My name is Marc, and I will be showing you a few of the best Dubstep songs (In my opinion) right now. Now, before we start, I should let you in on a few terms: ‘Sound cloud’ is a music sharing website, and ‘Monstercat’ is a company that takes requests from other composer-artists and puts their songs on their page. Also, ‘Glitch Hop’ is a genre that sounds like dubstep, but with a few more… glitch sounds, and ‘EDM’ stands for ‘Electro Dance Music’. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get on with the music!

One song from a little known dubstep group called I.Y.F.F.E. (don’t ask what it stands for) has recently caught the attention of a number of different Dubstep artists, such as Skrillex. A quote written by Monstercat from the duo’s Facebook page says:

“Robot monster’s from outer space, I.Y.F.F.E – One of EDM’s most promising new duos – I.Y.F.F.E are already causing a stir. Comprising of Brazilian star Alex Mind with well-known producer and Canadian legend Conrad Funk, I.Y.F.F.E have already taken the scene by storm. Boasting a back catalogue with releases on the likes of Borgore’s. Buygore as well as the honour of winning the prestigious OWSLA Seven Lions remix contest.”

Alright, below you will find this song that I have been talking about, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

Next on our list is ‘Short Shorts’, by Stephen Walking. This is a very interesting song. It isn’t quite Dubstep, just a bit of a Glitch Hop, but still sounds amazing. Here is a bit of a biography from his Facebook page.

“About time for a new bio. How does this look: Stephen Walking is a Toronto, Ontario, Canada, North America, Planet Earth Producer/Mp3J with a well groomed beard. He makes Dubstep/Electro slammers and is over 6 feet tall! Monstercat Media OG who’s collaborated with names like Ephixa and Going Quantum. His main goal as a musician is to break every bone in his body at shows. So far his score 0-206.”

Now, you may have never heard about this man, and neither had I before this, but just trust me when I say that he makes some great songs.

Now, after hearing all this, you are probably eager to hear the song itself. Here it is.

And now, for the big finale, we have ‘Ampersand’ from both Stephen Walking and Soulero. Now, correct me if I‘m wrong, but this is an amazing song. From never hearing about any of these people before to loving just about all of their songs, they would have to be pretty good at what they do.

Now, this would normally be the part where I would put a quick bio from the producers website or Facebook page, but this guy (Soulero) has such an interesting story, that I think that I will just put a link here instead:

Okay. So, now that you’ve heard me blabbering on long enough, let’s hear the music!

Ampersand by Stephen Walking & Soulero

Now that we’ve listened to all these songs, it’s time for me to go. But don’t worry! I’ll have three brand new songs to show you next time. This is Marc, Signing off.

Extreme Sports – Red Bull Rampage

– The highest level of mountain biking

The Red Bull Rampage is an invite-only freeride mountain bike competition held near Zion National Park in Virginia, Utah, USA.

images

The competition was held from 2001–2004 and then cancelled due to the increasing risk competitors were taking.

The Rampage however was re-introduced for the 2008 season. The event is similar to freestyle skiing and snowboarding, where competitors are judged on their choice of lines down the course, their technical ability and the complexity of tricks. For the 2008 event wooden features have been introduced to what has previously been a ‘Natural’ only course. This event still continues today.images (1)

Modern downhill bikes weigh between 14 and 19 kg (30 and 42 pounds), and usually feature full-suspension and frame geometries that lean back farther (slacker geometry) than other mountain bikes. As of 2006, 203 mm (8-inch) is the ‘norm’ for suspension travel however some commercially available big mountain freeride bikes can have over 300 mm (12-inch). Large-diameter 203–5 mm (8-inch) hydraulic disc brakes moderate speed.
