Spinning Helicopters

We made helicopters out of paper and we flew them. We made a big one and a small one. The little one landed first. If we added a paper clip it caused the helicopter to land first spin faster. A bigger paperclip on a smaller helicopter caused it to spin really, really, really, really, really fast.

In Huff and Puff we had to bounce the ball into a hoop to a partner for our relays. Chest passes and keeping our eye on the ball and hoop helped us to be more successful.

In Maths, we made Double Creatures with one feature and then two features and then four features and then eight features and so on and so on until some people got all the way to sixty four.

Meredith Costain’s Visit

Today we were lucky enough to have an author visit us for the morning. Her name was Meredith Costain. She has written books such as Doodledum Dancing, Bed Tails and some of the Dance Academy novels. We got to hear some of her poetry as well as act out one of her stories. Thank you Meredith from Melbourne. We really enjoyed your visit.

Huff and Puff was great fun with our relay races and ball handling skills.  IMG_3496IMG_3511IMG_3502

How many water drops can you fit on a coin?

IMG_3477This morning we started the day with our Huff and Puff relays. Today they were a little bit different as Mrs Fellows split our team into two and we had to run from both ends of the court to throw balls into the basket.

We went on the website  mrnussbaum.com/insectgenerator/ and made different insects. Tomorrow we will begin to design our own insect. Things that we have to consider are habitat, diet, special features, mouth type, etc.

In Maths we were introduced to doubles. A double is when we have the same amount two times, or two lots of something. We placed blocks on a ladybird and made sure we had the same amount on the other side.

In Science we continue to explore Surface Tension. We had to see how many drops of water we could fit onto a 20 cent coin. Mrs Fellows got 67 to fit before they all spilled off. We also worked out what happens when you add detergent. The detergent breaks the surface tension and causes the water to spill. We then used this knowledge to make paper boats that shooted across a tub of water.IMG_3458 IMG_3459 IMG_3460 IMG_3462 IMG_3467 IMG_3470 IMG_3472 IMG_3474

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

In Huff and Puff today we had to roll the tennis balls into a bucket. Sometimes they would roll out but they still counted towards our team’s score. Rolling helps us practise our underarm throw. Exercise is great for our brain and heart.

We looked at a Youtube clip about the brain today. The things that we can do to look after our brain are protect your head with a helmet during bike riding or other activities, exercise, eat healthy food and challenge your brain daily.

On the computers we went to the scrap colouring website, scapcoloring.com. There we could type and colour in our name and a picture of our choice.

We played a game of Non-Fiction Bingo. We found a lifecycle, labels, headings, diagrams and an index.

Tomorrow is Footy Colours Day. We are all very excited to have our families come for lunch and fun activities.

The Pond Skater

We got some plastic cups and marbles to see the surface tension. We looked at the pond skater. It can feel the vibrations of any creature that falls into the water. It takes the pond skater a second to skate across 1 metre of water.

We had to roll balls to our team for Huff and Puff.It also included lots of running and stopping the ball.

We were stuck inside all day because of the rain but we did get to use the computers to practise subtraction.

Things That Fly

Today we made balloons fly by using the air that comes out when we let them go. The air pushes the balloon around the room. Some of the balloons were red and white.

In Huff and Puff  we did relays but also had to throw a ball into a bucket. An underarm throw was the throw that worked best.

In Library we made kookaburra masks with Narelle and read the story Jeremy. It is about a baby kookaburra that grows up.

We made invitations for our families to come and join us for lunch on Footy Colours Day which is Friday 5th September. We will also be celebrating Father’s Day. We hope you can come in your team colours or wear something bright.

Today we had a Dress Up Day to celebrate the end of Book Week. We had a great day. Everybody in our class dressed up. Some of the book characters were Herbert Peabody, Elsa, Jack, Peter Pan, Iron Man, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Mrs Tittlemouse, Zac Power, Fancy Nancy, Spiderman, Scarface Claw, Tashi, Veruca Salt, a flamenco dancer, a witch on a broom, Minnie Mouse, a fly that went by.

The Book Fair was also on, which is many people’s favourite part of Book Week. We were able to buy books, pencils and rubbers. Mrs Fellows always buys lots of books.

Narelle put on a very special morning tea with a cake that looked like a caterpillar. There were also some prizes awarded to a boy and girl in each class that wore a costume.

Narelle looked absolutely gorgeous as a caterpillar but then, after she had a sleep, she was even more beautiful as a butterfly.

Thank you so much for all of your hard work towards making Book Week such a success Narelle and so much fun. The Prep/Ones have had a fantastic time.

Book Week

This week we are celebrating Book Week. The theme is Connect to Reading. Narelle has planned a number of great activities for us this week beginning with a Scrabble and Connect 4 Championship in the Library. When we won we got to choose from some great prizes. Thank you Narelle.

We began the day with Cohen bringing some Show and Tell. It was a very fat frog. We talked about it being an amphibian.

We decided to make our very own books and were so enthusiastic about it that we wrote for almost an hour. We talked about our favourite characters and created our own Character Jigsaw for Book Week.

Ferdinand the Bull

Ferdinand the bullThis morning Ms Mounsey did some Flamenco dancing for us in the Library but she was actually pretending to be Gigi. Mrs van der Sant performed Ferdinand the Bull as a shadow puppet play. They were both fantastic and we enjoyed sharing the Toddler’s Reading Time with them.

We also got to eat yummy Churros. Thank you Jose. They  were delicious.

This morning we measured our Resting Pulse Rate. Either we are all extremely unhealthy or some of us found it difficult to find our pulse. We then exercised to see how our pulse rate changed.

This afternoon we practised our Auskick skills with a number of different activities set up on the oval. We also got to finish the MiniBeast movie that Ocean brought in and Aya introduced us to some groovy songs on Youtube about bugs.

It has been a very exciting week. Can’t wait until Book Week next week!

The Movie

This afternoon we watched a movie that told us more about insects. It included lifecycles.

Yesterday we made mosquitoes. We made them out of foam balls, pipettes, pipe cleaners for legs and little pom poms for a head and two eyes. Darren made Mrs Fellows a mosquito that is red and white. He made Mr Cashmore  one that is blue and white.

Did you know they have a mouth like an upside down funnel? The females drink blood, males drink plant juices. Females also have a higher pitched noise.
