Gabo Glory for 2014

House Championships 2014: Gabo Glory.

Gabo has won the house championships for the second year running. It was a much closer affair this year with Bastion almost stealing the win during Health and PE Week with double points on the line.  The Bastion House Captains were extremely gracious in defeat and were satisfied with building a platform for the future. Gabo House Captains congratulated their team by winning with sheer participation.

A huge thankyou to the House Captains that organised and assisted with the running of sport all year. And thanks to all the students who participated in these healthy, fun and hopefully lifelong encouraging events.

Meredith Costain’s Visit

Today we were lucky enough to have an author visit us for the morning. Her name was Meredith Costain. She has written books such as Doodledum Dancing, Bed Tails and some of the Dance Academy novels. We got to hear some of her poetry as well as act out one of her stories. Thank you Meredith from Melbourne. We really enjoyed your visit.

Huff and Puff was great fun with our relay races and ball handling skills.  IMG_3496IMG_3511IMG_3502

Paper Kites

Today we made a different style of kite out of paper.

We played Dodge Ball and we used the computers to practise the two numbers that add up to ten.

We also began to design our poster for Footy Colours Day. It will be on September 5th and we are inviting as many people as possible to help celebrate with us. We are hoping to raise more money than last year for children and teenagers with cancer.

Tuesday 5th August

Today we practised shot put with bean bags. We had to push not THROW!

We tried to finish our kites but we ran out of time to fly them.

We made ants that have three body parts, antennae and compound eyes. They also had peg mandibles.

In Maths we learnt about the Commutative Law. It means that if we know that

8 + 2 = 10 we know that 2 + 8 = 10 too. We call it a Freebie.

Netball – Bairnsdale

Squark. The Pelicans will fly again!!!

It was with this in mind the amateur Mallacoota P-12 College “Pelicans” Netball team would take on the professionals of Gippsland. The girls arrived bright and early at 7am to board the bus to Bairnsdale. The bus ride was filled with eager chatter and sports strategists. The energy was contagious. Timing was perfect, as we hit a large shower on the way to Bairnsdale, but no rain during competition.

During the first game v Bairnsdale SC the girls put up a great fight. Emma didn’t miss a basket, Kahli and Haydn were a fantastic defensive pair – using their strength to advantage. We narrowly lost the first game 10-6. The second game was against a much taller opponent is Lakes SC. The girls put up a great fight. Although out sized Jess and Hanna were as quick as baby pelicans, gliding across the court. The outcome was 10-4 in the negative. In the 3rd game the girls played the professional outfit from Nagle, in full body suits – just like the pro’s. The girls saw what playing twice a week and training for 10 years will do. The last game was our closest school, Orbost SC. They were a hard fighting outfit. Envy used her high to her advantage (and also blocked with the back of her head at times) and was a star on the wing. Kahli had a fight on her hands with a very intimidating GA. But she did fantastically, winning many free’s for the mighty Pelicans. The girls lost 6-21, but put in a great effort.

Thank you to all the girls, who committed to a team, dealt with 6hrs of driving, never gave up, and most importantly had fun!! You should be extremely proud of yourselves.

Two Very Special Visitors

IMG_0011 IMG_0013

On the 4th of June there was great excitement in the Prep/One classroom with two very special visitors. Tanya, the children’s kinder teacher had come to visit with her very cute little girl, Nellie. The class were able to ask lots of questions about what Nellie has been doing.

The children were also very pleased to be able to show Tanya a lot of the work that they have been doing.

We were delighted this week to receive a special letter from Tanya and Nellie thanking us for the book that we made for them both. It even showed them both reading the book and Nellie had a very inquisitive look on her face.

We hope to see them both again very soon.

This term the Prep/One class have participated in a variety of activities for Huff ‘n’Puff. The thirty minutes sessions have been running from Wednesdays to Fridays. Some of the favourite activities of the children included the balance board, hockey, throwing, skipping and galloping. Each session would end with the 800 metre run of the Run Around Australia track.

The Prep/One class would like to thank Minna for volunteering to organise and run this program for the term. Thank you also to Ros who was there to assist each day.

Next term Huff ‘n’ Puff will continue with a different format.

R is for Rooster

Today we made colourful roosters. Rooster begins with the sound /r/. So does Rose, Ruben and Ros. Rainbow, rain, rocket and Red Rex all begin with  an /r/ sound. Please come and see our display on our classroom windows.
